Camden - Grand Union Canal
Authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1766 (making it the oldest canal in London), it provides a short-cut from the River Thames at Limehouse Basin north-east to the River Lea Navigation, avoiding the tortuous curves of the lower reaches of the River Lea at Bow Creek. The Cut joins the Lea at Bromley-by-Bow.
100 years ago these sludge-tanks allowed the sewage from East-London to settle. When the tanks were full, trucks would take the dirt away to be used as fertiliser. When the Markfield pump was shut down these tanks were taken out of service.
